HORTUS [CON]TAINER BY ARCHITECTS ILARIA STROPPA & DIEGO BASSETTI: AWARDED THE HONOURABLE MENTION.

Project for Volume Zero–Unbox Competition.
Inspiration:
In the middle ages it was common practice to create and use enclosed gardens, called hortus conclusus. it is a green area, generally small, surrounded by high walls, where plants and trees are mainly cultivated for food and medicinal purposes.

Project idea:
Today we want to reinterpret and overturn the idea of hortus conclusus, as a metaphor for the creation of a public space, within which people can grow and buy flowers, vegetables and herbs for everyday use. this space is called hortus [con]tainer.
Where:
This building is placed in urban city gardens, where there is enough space to host the 4 modules. in fact, hortus [con]tainer is made by 4 40' containers , but it can also be built (in smaller scale) from 20' and 10' modules, depending on the dimensions of the urban garden.
How:
4 containers, slightly overlapped to create 2 levels (ground and first floor) and to create a central public space (patio).
+ wireframe external structure to gain stability and to uniform the design
+ internal staircase to create a second level
+ green areas in the central patio and flowers / herbs / vegetable basins
+ gaining transparency by replacing the container’s metal facade with transparent panels.
